Implications meeting

We went for the next meeting at the clinic yesterday evening, they call it 'Implications' I guess this is because they give you the low down on what to expect over the next six weeks.

We sat down with Caroline who first talked us through what happens inside a woman during a natural conception and what will happen with me! I learned a few things I didn't know already such as when you ovulate each month you can release up to four eggs! I always thought it was only one! I also learned that the sperm has to travel ALL the way up the fallopian tube to fertilise the egg, then the egg is wafted back down to the uterus, now I knew that the egg was fertilised in the tube but I always thought it was near the entrance to the uterus – it’s a wonder how anyone ever gets pregnant!

We also went through the next stage – injecting the drugs! I’ve been given Buserelin to take which is 0.5ml per day (I think from memory – it’s up to the 50 line on the syringe). This has to be injected into my tummy or the top of my leg, every day at the same time. I will do it around 8pm tomorrow night to ensure that hubby can do it in future! I really want him to be a part of this process from start to finish.

I was also given my dates:

7th June start Buserelin Injections – this is the down regulation drugs that switch off my normal cycle.

14th June I should get my regular period!

21st June they will give me a baseline scan, this is to take a look at my follicles and the to measure the lining of my womb to see where it is at!

22nd June I will begin the 2nd phase and start a new drug call menopur – this is designed to switch everything back on and start to stimulate my ovaries to grow lots of lovely egg follicles and also tells my uterus to start getting thicker ready for the implantation of the embryo.

On the 28th, and 30th June I will go for a scan, they will be measuring the womb lining and checking up on my growing follicles to make sure all is going well.

On the 3rd July I will have another scan and also take something called Pregnyl – I can’t remember what she said this was for – I’m sure I’ll ask again nearer the time!

On the 5th July I will be going for egg collection! This is done under a general anaesthetic and takes around 20-30 minutes to perform. They will take a long needle and punch through the vaginal walls to get it to the ovaries where they will burst the little egg sacs and suck out all the fluid (sounds lovely doesn’t it!) the fluid should contain and egg! I get to have this done on both sides to ensure they get all the possible eggs from both ovaries.

The same day they will take another sperm sample from hubby (who had a super sperm count of 100 million!) and mix the two together in a Petri dish. We get to go home at lunch time and wait for the all important phone call to tell me how many eggs they got!

Then it’s a 2 day wait but I should find out how many of the eggs were fertilised by the super sperm!

7th July is Embryo transfer day!!!!!!!!

This is a simple procedure where they take a long needle type thing (can’t remember the technical name so I’ll simplify!) that goes into the womb, this will release the growing embryo into the walls of my uterus where hoefully it will stick and grow into a gorgeous little baby (girl) – OK so I’m hopeful on the girl front but one can wish….

21st July – the BIG day. I get to take a pregnancy test and find out if all of the needles, drugs and £5k was worth it. Lets hope for a BFP!!! (Big Fat Positive – fertilityfriends.co.uk)

Keep everything crossed for me please :)
