The first week

I can hardly believe that they are already almost a week old. The last week of my pregnancy went by so slowly that I thought it would never end, but this past week has been a blur and went in about 5 minutes!

As I said in my last post, we were allowed to come home from the hospital on Thursday - this was really unexpected as we had been told that with twins you can expect to be in hospital for about 5 days - especially after a c-section.

However as I was recovering very fast, and the girls were OK, they must have seen that we would be better off as a family at home as the last night at the hospital was pretty horrendous!

Leaving the hospital was a big thing, we got them into their car seats and Chris carried them to the car, it felt so strange putting these two little people into the back of the car into the seat bases and driving home, knowing that we finally had children in the back of our car - and they were OURS!

We got home and brought them in, got them out of their seats and held them tight, and just cried. We have a picture in our living room of our son Matthew, it was three years ago that we lost him and there we stood, in our home with our two brand new daughters, looking at that picture and knowing that our long IVF journey was finally over, and a new journey was about to begin.

I can't even begin to describe how that felt as it's just a moment in time that felt so good it was truly amazing, wonderful, we felt relief, joy, happiness, and awe all at once.

We didn't get much sleep that night, mostly down to adjusting to the new world and also because they didn't sleep much either!

Friday was also a blur, learning to see their patterns of feeding, sleeping and nappy changing. We also had a visit from the midwives who just turned up unannounced to check up on us (we would have appreciated a call to know what time they were coming!).

Saturday we went to Basingstoke - a nearby town to get a new bra for me - my milk has come in and the boobies have grown somewhat!! So a first shopping trip out with them was in order and Basingstoke has a large Mothercare where we could get a few bits for me and them. We also went into the town centre, stopped in Starbucks to get coffee for us and feed them, used the changing facilities in the shopping centre (which is really very good at Festival Place - we are impressed!) and went to a couple of shops.

Sunday was a lazy day - more visits from a midwife, didn't even bother to get out of my PJ's - we just spent the day getting a few things done around the house, looking after the kids! and catching up with the outside world via facebook and email!

So here we are on Monday - My mum has popped in a few times over the last few days and been really helpful with cooking for us, and keeping an eye on the girls while we popped out to the supermarket.

Here are a few more photos from the first week, click on them to see a bigger version:

Vancouver calling.

Sod the Olympics. Emily and Faith are far bigger news! They are JUST DELIGHTFUL.

Elly, we've never met. Probably we never will. But the joy of the Internet is that I found your story and that I could follow your dream as it took its twists and turns and finally came to be. Your daughters are beautiful and feisty and full of life. Just what you deserve.

Much love,
Jane and family in Canada
